The evolution mechanic from the original Spore will be retained, though in Spore Hero to evolve the player will have to complete special "Evolutionary Quests." Once these quests are completed not only will the player’s creature evolve, it will be able to learn new abilities such as jumping. Players will interact with other creatures on the planet during their adventures in social and combative ways. The goal of Spore Hero is to shape this newfound planet into your own through a number of quests and adventures. While the original Spore title started you off as primordial ooze, in Spore Hero your creature will already be in an evolved state and will arrive on a new planet after its original home planet was destroyed by a catastrophic event. According to the team, the Wii was chosen due to its pointing functionality, as it allowed them to mimic the PC's editing interface.

The creature creator found in the PC version of Spore will be present in Spore Hero as will the pointer driven editing tools. In a recent interview with MTV’s Stephen Totillo, Lucy Bradshaw, general manager of The Sims and Spore series confirmed the existence of Spore Hero, a brand new game in the Spore series built specifically from the ground up for Wii.
